Teachers in Nyamira county owe coffin makers in the area more Sh97,000, it has been disclosed. And Manga Kenya National Union of Teachers executive officer Nicholas Nyang’au pointed an accusing finger at the former Nyamira Burial and Benevolent Scheme (BBS) officials who he said failed to settle the debts for the coffins bought on credit for their departed colleagues. “It is a shame to teachers because it sounds barbaric when their benevolent scheme fails to settle such a debt,” said Nyang’au.
Addressing a group of retired teachers at Kemera market yesterday, the unionist said that the officials had also changed the scheme into a society without the knowledge of the members, claiming that it was a conduit to embezzle their money, an allegation the officials have since denied. ''Nyang’au bought the coffins on credit but had failed to settle the debt, raising an unnecessary hue and cry among the suppliers,'' said the BBS officials.
But Nyang'au said: ''After Knut officials from Manga, Borabu, Nyamira and Masaba Knut branches exposed corruption at the scheme, they found out that its account had only Sh135, prompting them to close it.'' Raising similar concerns, Borabu KNUT executive secretary John Matiang said they had reported the matter to the national office for action to be taken against the officers.
