A man appeared before a Kisii court charged with kidnapping a five-year-old girl and attempting to obtain money under duress.
Amos Ndocha allegedly committed the offence on September 3, 2011 at Marani in Kisii County.
He was charged with kidnapping the girl from the lawful guardianship of James Onunda on September 9, and with intent to extort money from Onunda, threatened to accuse him of being a habitual robber.
The accused denied the charges before Kisii Senior Resident Magistrate Kimutai Koech.
The court heard that on the said date, jointly with others not before court, Ndocha found the child playing with colleagues at her residential home where he introduced himself as an uncle.
He then asked the child to accompany him after giving her playmates Sh5 to go and buy sweets from a nearby shop. The accused then disappeared with the child. He later went to Marani market where the girl’s mother Naomi Nyaboke operates a business. He approached Nyaboke and informed her that her daughter had been kidnapped and that the captors were demanding Sh10 million for her release.
The mother reported the incident to the police and Ndocha was later arrested in town and the child rescued.
Investigation revealed he was taking the child to Laikipia town. Hearing was adjourned until November 24, and the accused was released on a Sh200,000 bond with a surety of similar amount.
Kimutai also directed the prosecution to provide the defence with all documents in the suit at their cost.
