TWO MPs from Kisii county disagreed publicly over the selection of members of the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission. While Public Works minister Chris Obure defended the selections, his Nyaribari Chache counterpart Robert Monda claimed that the vetting process was not free and fair.
Monda further claimed that powerful politicians were influencing the selection of members by the Ekuru Aukot’s panel. He also alleged that there was a plot to continue marginalising the community from key constitutional appointments. Speaking at Mosora in Bobasi constituency, Monda said there is a plot to continue sidelining us and as leaders we are not going to sit down and watch.
Monda alleged that Prime Minister Raila Odinga was influencing the selections and warned that his popularity was waning in Kisii and Nyamira counties. Obure however defended the selection panel and asked leaders and Kenyans to respect the process.
He denied claims by Monda that the community had been given a raw deal in state and constitutional offices. He said several members of the community have been selected to the offices. “I wonder how the PM comes in when the interviews are done in public not even the president or MPs influence the selections.
The selection process for IEBC as fair and transparent,” added the Bobasi MP. Separately, North Mugirango Borabu’s Wilfred Ombui also claimed that the selection of members of the IEBC was not fair. The Aukot committee last week presented the names of 16 to President Kibaki and PM Raila Odinga.
