Nyamira teachers plea

More than 100 retired teachers from Borabu district in Nyamira county yesterday threatened to march to Nairobi and camp at the offices of the Teachers Service Commission as well as the offices of the ministry of Education unless the government raise their pension by 100 per cent. Speaking at Nyansiongo where they held a meeting over the weekend, the retirees said since President Kibaki increased their pension by 20 per cent in 2003, no other increment has been effected despite the high cost of living.

Flanked by union officials, Edward Ombongi (chairman) and treasurer Charles Mogaka, the unionist noted that retirees earned less pension than maids who earned Sh7000 per month. Former Nyansiongo High school Principal Patrick Anyega said retired teachers lead miserable lives despite having played a vital role in shaping the destiny of people now holding high positions in the government. “We are urging the President and the Prime Minister to intervene,” Ayenga said.
