Kisii judge: Plant trees for Maathai

A High Court Judge yesterday urged Kenyans to plant trees in honour of the late environmentalist icon and Nobel Peace prize winner Wangari Maathai. Kisii resident Judge Justice Ruth Sitati said the late Maaithai played a key role in the preservations of the environment saying it it was vital to embrace her. “I want to encourage Kenyans of all walks to at least plant a tree each in honor and remembrance of the late environmentalist icon,” Justice Sitati said.
Leading magistrates and court officers implanting of trees in at the Kisii Law Courts in commemoration of Maathai, the Judge commended her brave steps and values in conserving the environment. She noted that Mathai stood for values of justice and hard work saying Kenyans should plant trees at their homes, working and learning institutions to immortalize her and effect her legacy.
During the planting exercise attained by newly posted judge Roselyne Lagat Korir, Justice Sitati challenged the elites to spearhead campaigns in tree planting and avoid the notion that it was a preserve of uneducated people. She said that Justice Korir who replaces Justice Milton Makhandia who has since been transferred to Machakos would assist reduce the backlog of cases in the court to speed dispensation of justice.
Korir comes few days after area Law society of Kenya (LSK) Chairman; Samson Sagwe urged the government to deploy three High court Judges to cope with the increasing number of cases in the High court. Sagwe noted that residents from the neighboring counties filed their cases in Kisii High court, overwhelming the few Judges in the area.
During his farewell speech, Makhandia asked the paralegals to work a hand in hand with justice Korir to make work easier. “I know you will face certain challenges as a new judge but this should not scare you. I am certain that if you nurture good working conditions with the paralegals work will move smoothly,” Judge makhandia told Korir. During his one and half year’s tenure in Kisii Makhandia helped to settle 1, 200 cases out of 6000 which were pending in the High Court.
