IIEC denies Kitutu Masaba claims

THE Interim Independent Electoral Commission yesterday denied reports that politicians had fronted their supporters to conduct civic education in Kitutu Masaba. The commission’s Nyanza South regional coordinator Sarah Ogaro said recruitment of civic educators was done on merit. “We advertised and people applied. We are doing the recruitment on merit and nobody is influencing the recruitment,” she told the Star on phone.

She said the recruitment was concluded yesterday and civic educators will start their work on Monday ahead of the November 28 by election. Ogaro was responding to claims by ODM candidate Timothy Bosire that some politicians had influenced the recruitment of their supporters as civic education providers. “I have received complaints that some politicians have influenced to have their people as civic education providers. This is not fair and I want the commission to investigate these claims,” Bosire told the Star in a telephone interview.

At the same time, the IIEC has started the process of recruiting election officials to conduct the by election. Yesterday, the commission CEO James Oswago advertised positions for deputy presiding officers, polling and counting clerks. According to Oswago the commission will not employ presiding officers as the commission will deploy its permanent staff. Oswago said the applicants must be residents in the constituency which they apply.
