CARDINAL Otunga High School, Mosocho in Kisii will this weekend celebrate 50 years since its inception. The 50 years anniversary celebrations will be held at the institution on Saturday, said the principal Zachary Nyariki and chairman of Cardinal Otunga Old Boys Association (COOBA) chairman Clement Nyandiere yesterday.
Speaking separately, Nyariki and Nyandiere said that preparations for the celebrations are complete. They said several activities are lined up for the day including a football match, presentation of long serving academic and sports awards, thanks-giving mass, speeches and motivational talks from former students among others. "As old boys, we have made an undertaking to build a two-storey dormitory at the school as our way of giving back. Plans are at an advanced stage," said Nyandiere.
The duo agreed that the former academic giant in the country has been on an upward trend in past few years and expressed optimism that it will regain its lost glory. "If you look at our performance, it has always been on an upward trend and we want to do better next year," added Nyariki. "We are constructing a monument that will bear statues of Cardinal Maurice Otunga and the first principal of the school Innocent De-Kok," said Nyariki.
The school was founded by Catholic brothers from Holland at the request of then Bishop of the Diocese of Kisii, Maurice Otunga. "Years on, Cardinal has produced men who have served Kenya and the world in many spheres- from corporate to government; from farms to factory; from social circles to sports fields," said Nyandiere who is the director of research and information services in parliament. Nyariki hailed the school's alumni for support.
