Kitutu Masaba aspirants warned against campaigns

THE Interim Independent Electoral Commission yesterday warned candidates in the forthcoming Kitutu Masaba by-election against early campaigns. Returning officer Fredrick Owino said action will be taken against those flouting election rules.“We have released the election timetable and we expect the official campaigns to start in November. We expect the aspirants to adhere to the rules failure to which action will be taken once an official complaint is made,” he told the Star on phone.

The IIEC will receive nominations on November 2 and 3 while the election will take place on the November 28. He however denied claims that candidates have started campaigning for the seat which fell vacant after the election of Walter Nyambati was nullified by the court.“I’m in the constituency as we speak and I have not seen anybody campaigning and I have not received reports to that effect,” he added.

He said IIEC’s legal team will deal with any complaints on flouting of election rules and recommend necessary action. However, the Star established that several candidates were have hit the ground soliciting for votes in funerals and other public gatherings while others are holding strategy meetings with their supporters.

Those in the race are former MPs Walter Nyambati (NLP), Mwancha Okioma (Ford People), Timothy Bosire (ODM), Nyambega Mose (Nark Kenya), Shadrack Mose (KNC), Patrick Omani (PDP) and Obwaya Onsinyo who has not identified a party which he will use to vie for the seat. Nyambega declared that he was ready to clinch the seat that was ‘stolen’ from him in the year 2007. Both Nyambega, and Bosire claim that they won the seat. “People have started spreading propaganda but I want to tell them that they will not sway me. From October 1, I’m handing over my law firm to friends in Nairobi to concentrate on the campaigns,” Nyambega told the Star in a telephone interview.
