Cases where children are neglected and their rights abused in Nyamira district have become rampant and worrying.
The area district children’s officer Samwel Masese said that some parents especially fathers have totally abandoned their responsibility of taking care of their children following domestic differences with their wives.
Masese noted that during the domestic violence children become the major victims as they are subjected to untold suffering by both parties.
Addressing members of the provincial administration in a Nyamira hotel, Masese said that his office is always flocked with more than thirty cases daily where parents have neglected their children.
He asked the chiefs and their assistants to device ways of addressing conflicts in families so as to save the agony which the innocent children are undergoing through.
The office asserted due to domestic violence, majority of the children have dropped out of school.
Masese told the administrators that by the virtue of being grass root leaders, they stood at a better position of addressing the children’s basic rights when they are violated.
He also decried cases of child labor in the region where minors were being used in sand harvesting and tea picking in the nearby tea estates.
He warned that his office could not tolerate parents or guardians who were violating the children’s basic rights.
Masese appealed to members of the public to volunteer information on cases where children are neglected and their rights abused so that action can be taken against those doing so.
