Kisii Politicians Publicly Clash Over Poll Date Change

Kisii politicians yesterday differed in public over the decision by the Cabinet to change the polling date from August to December 2012. Trade assistant minister Manson Nyamweya publicly differed with ministers Sam Ongeri, Chris Obure, assitant ministers James Gesami, Simon Ogari and Bonchari MP Charles Onyancha over the matter.

While the rest defended the cabinet for passing a proposal to change polling date, Nyamweya on other told the leaders that it is wrong for them to violate the same constitution they voted for. He said the constitution must be respected to the letter. "The constitution stipulates clearly that the next general election must be held on August so I don't see the reason the cabinet wants to violate this," Nyamweya said.

Speaking at Misisita SDA church in Bonchari constituency during a fundraiser in aid of the church, Nyamweya said the budget should be read in on April to pave way for the election but not changing the polls date. "The constitution must respect because the proposed amendment in itself is a breach of the same law," he added. However answering Ongeri and Obure said the cabinet proposed for the amendment to the constitution of Kenya 2010 to change the elections date because all structures to actualise the new constitution are not in place.
