Spate of killings causes fear in Kisii

Residents of Kisii yesterday decried rising insecurity following a spate of killings by thugs. The residents have called on Internal Security minister George Saitoti to reshuffle security officers in the area because they have failed to curb crime. The body was found dumped in an open quarry near Gusii Stadium yesterday, barely 12 hours after the body of a KMTC employee was discovered at Nyambera area.

The body of Sagini Onyango, who worked as a mason in Kisii, was discovered floating on water in the quarry. Samson Onyango said his brother had left their Nyanchwa Ekerore home for work on Tuesday morning but never returned. “We thought that he had left for Kisumu to finish some work but we were shocked when we received information that his body has been discovered in a quarry,” he said.

On Thursday morning, the body of Eliud Sitienei, who worked as a librarian at Kisii Medical Training College, was discovered near River Nyambera. A week ago, the decomposing body of another man was discovered in a matatu near Kobil Petrol Station a week after he went missing. The man worked as a mechanic in Kisii. Police chief Tom Mutisya said the police were investigating the killings. “I don’t want to appear in the press everyday over insecurity. Police are investigating the incidences,” Mutisya said.
