Nyamira varsity students henn project spreads wings to Kisii

The One Hen Project initiated by the university students to reduce poverty in the Nyamira county two months ago has spread its wings to the neighbouring Kisii county. Speaking a Kiamokama division where they donated 400 hens to members of Rikenye Women Self Help Group, IEP chairman James Makini said the challenge they face is getting feeds.

The four University of Nairobi students who are running the project under the Innovation Empowerment Programme (IEP) with the support from the Cereals Growers Association (CGA), buy hens and give them to beneficiaries who in turn will surrender two off springs after six months for others to benefit.

Makini said the group intends to start producing the feeds to help beneficiaries but would not divulge the simple technology, fearing the idea could be stolen. CGA chief executive officer, David Nyameino said the local political leadership should help address challenges facing the youths’ initiative so that it can help alleviate poverty. Nyameino said due to the rising population in Gusiiland, it is important for residents to embrace modern farming techniques so as to achieve economic stability.
