Athletics attention turn to Kisii Golden

The 2011 Gusii golden series will kick off on Friday 9th September as athletics action flows down to Nyanza south over the weekend a week after the outstanding outing by Kenyan athletes in Daegu. The event will be sponsored by Safaricom the title sponsors who on Wednesday unveiled a 2 million shillings package towards supporting the 9th edition of the annual event.

The 1st race scheduled for Friday will take place in Namache town, Gucha district while the 2nd series will be held in Kisii town on 23rd September.The final race will then be held in Kebiringo on the 7th of October.

According to the organizers, there will be an exclusive prize set aside for the jackpot winner who will collect the highest amount of points in all the three 10km races. The jackpot winner in both the women and men categories will take home an additional cash prize of KSH 50,000 as well as livestock and farm produce prizes.

The price money structure in the Gucha race will see the winners in both categories pocket KSH. 15,000 in cash and a bull while the 2nd finisher take home a goat and a total of KSH 7,500. The 3rd positioned athlete will also receive KSH 3,000 accompanied by a sack of maize. Other athletes finishing 4th to 10th position will each receive KSH 1,000.

Also present during the unveiling on Wednesday was Peter Agwenyi, Athletics Kenya Public Relations Officer. Agwenyi acknowledged the good breed of new athletes rising from the south Nyanza.“Some of the athletes who have come through the Gusii golden league include, Ruth Bosibori the (3000m steeplechase), Peter Kirui who finished 6th in the world athletics championships in Daegu, Grace Momanyi, Caroline Rotich amongst others,” stated Agwenyi

The 2 million shillings offered by Safaricom will cater for the 3 series of the Gusii golden series. The Cheque was presented to the event’s organizing chairman Charles Asati. Asati himself was part of the 4*400m relay team that registered history by bagging the gold medal in 1972 during the Olympic games that were held in Munich, Germany.
