Group of MPs backs Kipsigis-Kisii unity

A section of Rift Valley MPs have backed efforts by Kipsigis Council of Elders to start unity talks with the Kisii. Elders led by the Kipsigis elders Chairman Joseah Sang are engaged in peace talks with elders from neighbouring Kisii. The peace efforts are aimed at communities along Sotik-Borabu boarder.

At the weekend, MPs led by Eldoret North MP William Ruto said they supported the elders efforts to unite the communities along the volatile border.

Ruto said the move taken by the elders will strengthen ties between the Kalenjin and the Kisii communities ahead of next general election. “We want to build peace with all our neighbours,” said Ruto.

MPs in the unity drive are Joyce Laboso, Sotik, Isaac Rutto, Chepalungu, and Charles Keter, Belgut. “We have had a consultative meeting with Kisii leaders led by Simion Nyachae and other elders,” said Ruto Ruto added: “The initiative by the elders is good and we respect them in their plans to unite the communities and guide political leaders on the way forward.” Council chairman Sang said at a separate forum that the elders are committed at fostering a long-lasting unity.
