Teacher kills self after quarrel with wife

A secondary school teacher in Gucha district, Kisii County committed suicide after a quarrel with his wife.

The body of the 42-year-old teacher at Nyamagwa Girls High School was found dangling from the ceiling in his bedroom on Tuesday.

His death brings to four the number of teachers who have committed suicide in the area in the last one year.

Neighbours said the father of five had quarreled with his wife on Monday and she went back to her parent’s home.

They said the teacher had a long standing domestic row with the wife. But in a bid to strengthen their marriage, the two wedded at a church.

During the Monday quarrel, the wife had threatened to ask the priest to nullify their union if the problems persisted.

Neighbours said they last saw the teacher on Tuesday morning after he took his cattle to a field to graze before returning to his house.

They said the teacher briefly spoke to a neighbor before retreating into his house. They later discovered he had taken his life.

No suicide note was found at the scene.

Gucha OCPD Richard Ng’etich confirmed the incident saying the body had been moved to Kisii Level Five Hospital mortuary.

In November last year a head teacher at Nyagiki primary school committed suicide and left a suicide note saying he was overwhelmed with paying fees for his children.

Two weeks earlier, a head teacher at Mokubo primary school took his life reportedly due to accumulated debts at the school.

In June this year, a principal at Kegochi secondary school in Nyamache committed suicide over a domestic row.

"We are shocked at the high number of teachers resorting to suicide. We know teachers face a lot of stress but it should not end up this way," said Gucha KNUT branch secretary Sammy Nyairo.
