A prisoner escaped in Kisii yesterday, hardly a month after 11 capital offenders escaped at Nyaikuro. The inmate had been assigned to do some work at the DC's compound.
Last month, 11 prisoners escaped from a police lorry as they were being driven to court in Nyamira where they were to face various charges.
It was not immediately established how the man escaped from the hands of an armed prison warder who was guarding him.
The prisons’ officer in charge Mohammed Siomi said that warders had mounted a search of the escaped prisoner and had combed most estates. He said that there was no cause for alarm saying that he was optimistic that the man will be re-arrested and charged with escaping from lawful custody.
When asked the term the escapee was serving, Siomi was non-committal saying it was not necessary. Police in Nyamira have since managed to rearrest seven of the 11suspects who escaped last month in various parts.
In June 2009 prison warders shot dead a convict after he attempted to escape from the Kisii GK Prison. The prisoner who was serving a three-year jail term for assault was killed after failing to heed an order to stop from the warders. The prisoner was shot moments after jumping over the fence some 300 metres from the prison.
