Six arrested in Kisii for fighting for their rights

Six elderly persons who were arrested for extortion in Nyamache, Kisii last week are demanding an explanation from the concerned authorities. The six from Masige East location are Sh5,000 they lost during the arrest. Desderius Machaka, Jason Michaka, Zablon Omwancha, Onkundi Mokua, Mogwasi Oigo and Obara Omwancha claimed that they lost the cash and documents when they were bundled into a G K vehicle and taken to Nyangusu police station.

Machaka said DC Stanley Too allowed them to organise the meeting to educate the elderly on funds available for them. Machaka said before DO1 Brigid Makokha addressed the meeting, police arrested them. He said Nyangusu OCS referred them to Ogembo police station where the OCPD referred them back to Nyangusu before recording statements. They were locked up with each paying a Sh2,000 bond. “We were being treated like criminals and yet it is the DC who gave us the go ahead to organise the meeting which was to be addressed by the DO1. We demand for an explanation as to why we were arrested and labeled as extortionists,” Machaka said.

Too accused the elders of extorting residents Sh50 each for mobilisation but the elders denied saying people and the elderly paid the money. “We never extorted money from anybody as the DC puts it. We agreed by consensus to pay the Sh50 to hire public address systems, erect a platform and buy water for the guests,” he added. Machaka alleged that the chief had harassed the organising committee and allegedly demanded Sh3,000 bribe through proxies which he declined.
