Anyona Queries How School Funds Were Used

There was heated exchange of words when members questioned how Sh42 million raised by President Moi for Kisii High School was used.

Education Minister Henry Kosgey and Kitutu Masaba MP George Anyona disagreed on how the money was used after the fund raiser held 18 years ago.

Kosgey insisted that the money was meant for the wider Kisii District including Nyamira and Gucha. But Anyona insisted the money was solely raised to enable the rehabilitation of buildings at Kisii High School started by Nyaribari Chache MP Simeon Nyachae's father.

Anyona said the harambee was initiated by Nyachae, who was an old boy of the school and the then Chief Secretary.

Anyona said he was in detention at Shimo la Tewa Prison during the harambee but sought the indulgence of Muhoroni MP William Omamo who attended the occasion, to confirm whether or not the money was meant for Kisii High School or primary schools in the district.

Anyona had during question time sought to know whether the minister was aware that the school's buildings are in a dilapidated state since the demolition of the tuition block in 1982.

Karisa Maitha (Kisauni, DP) said harambees have been used to swindle Kenyans.

Kosgey promised to give a full report in two weeks.
