Minister And Doctors Differ Over Herbal Medicine Plan

Public Health Minister Sam Ongeri on Friday differed with doctors over proposals for the dispensing of herbal medicine in hospitals.

Prof Ongeri, who was officiating at the 30th Kenya Medical Association conference in Eldoret, said herbal medicine was becoming an alternative to conventional medicine all over the world and Kenya would not be an exception.

"A task force has been formed to find how this could succeed in the country and KMA is also represented.."

Doctors had said dispensing herbal medicine in hospitals could encourage incompetence and unprofessionalism.

Prof Ongeri was accompanied by his Ugandan counterpart, Capt Mike Mukula, Tanzania's Hussein Mwinyi and the East African Community deputy secretary, Mr Kibyego Cheluget.

The minister said 70 to 80 per cent of patients in the country were seeking treatment from herbalists.

The Director of Medical services, Dr Richard Muga, said the government would soon review the doctors' remuneration and working conditions.

The Ugandan minister and his Tanzanian counterpart, Dr Cheluget, called on East African governments to form a common strategy in the fight against HIV/Aids.

Prof Ongeri was apologetic for arriving three hours late, saying he had just arrived from New York on Thursday morning and travelled to Kisii to mark the World Malaria Day. He said in Suba District, locals had discovered a plant that could prove useful in fighting malaria by reducing life cycle of mosquitoes.
