Ongeri Backs Besieged Tea Firm Directors

Wrangles over the management of a tea factory in Kisii District deepened yesterday when a Cabinet minister rallied behind the beleaguered directors.

Public Health Minister Sam Ongeri termed as bogus, a group formed recently to run Kiamokama tea factory in his Nyaribari Masaba constituency.

"The six directors have the full mandate of the farmers who elected them to office and if the farmers are dissatisfied with their services, they will force them out through the right channel," he said at Keroka Primary School.

However, he asked the directors to convene an annual general meeting for the farmers to raise their concern.

The minister was reacting to last week's move by some farmers who passed a vote of no confidence in the directors and appointed an interim team. The new team, led by Mr Onsongo Kerama, had demanded an urgent meeting to discuss the company's accounts.

They accused Prof Ongeri of imposing the directors on farmers and criticised the Kenya Tea Development for allegedly frustrating farmers' efforts to discuss their problems.
