The teachers who are currently serving at approved Teacher 1 and S1 levels have been demoted to the P1 grade.
According to the letters addressed to the affected teachers, the commission also demanded that they repay all the money they have earned while in the grade illegally.
One of the affected teachers yesterday showed The Standard a copy advising him of the change. The TSC is demanding that he surrender back Sh600,000 he had earned while serving in the grade.
"I do not know where I will get the money to pay this back because currently, I am servicing a normal loan, emergency and school fees loans and my net pay is below Sh800," he said.
He insisted that his promotion was genuine as it had been certified by the Ministry of Education and the TSC.
Confirming the incident, Kisii Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) branch executive secretary David Mokamba and his Nyamira counterpart Richard Kibagendi said they have received several complaints from the affected teachers over the demotions.
Mokamba and Kibagendi asked teachers affected to personally forward their documents from TSC to their offices so that they can forward them to Knut headquarters for action.
Kibagendi said that among those affected are currently serving as head teachers, TAC tutors and zonal inspectors.
There was fear at education officers in Nyamira District as some officers wonder whether they might be incriminated as many of them were in some way involved in making the illegal promotions.
One of the officers, Mr Ishmael Hassan, told the teachers who received the letters of demotion to relinquish their positions immediately.
