Nyanya Cup in Quarters As Osero And Anunda Action Gathers Steam

The inaugural Nyanya Cup soccer tournament, that has been running in Nyamira District, reaches its quarter-finals on July 30. Kenya Football Federation's Nyamira sub-branch chairman Samuel Omwoyo yesterday said 12 teams will play in the quarter-finals of the tournament that is being held in Nyamira, Nyamaiya, Sironga and Kiambere divisions of Nyamira District.

Four teams will be drawn from the two groups in Kiambere with two from Nyamira and three each from Sironga and Nyamaiya divisions.

"The winners from each venue will have the advantage of playing their quarter-final matches at their homegrounds when the draw is done," Omwoyo, a retired referee, said yesterday. Two teams will be given a bye to the semi-finals of the tournament and will be joined by two others in the last four. The final of the tournament will be played in mid-August although the exact date is yet to be confirmed.

A total of 34 teams entered the inaugural tournament sponsored by the Kebirigo Athletics Club that also organises the annual Kebirigo 10km Road Race which will this year be held on October 7 in Kebirigo town, Nyamira District. The club is working on a long-term programme to develop sports activities in Nyamira.

Elsewhere in Nyamira, the Patrick Osero Cup is gathering momentum while in Kisii, the George Anunda tournament is taking shape after last weekend's round of matches. In the weekend matches of the Osero Cup, Isoge Paratroopers beat Itumbe 1-0 at Borabu's Ensakia ground.

Fred Omari struck the all-important goal in the 67th minute after being put through by Benson Mackenzie. At Manga, Manga Pirates edged out SPA Laitigo 2-1 in a tough encounter.

John Matwere struck twice for Manga while Jonathan Ondigi pulled one back for SPA. At Memisi, favourites Kebuse were held to a barren draw by visiting Muungano FC. Hosts Kiptenden beat Sotik Highlands 2-1 in another match in which Sotik were the first to score in the 34th minute through David Otieno before John Megeke hit a quick double for Kiptenden in 67th and 70th minutes.

The tournament is sponsored by Nairobi businessman Patrick Osero. In last weekend's George Anunda Cup action, hosts Mogweko FC thumped visiting Chironge 3-0 in Nyaribari Maasaba, Kisii District. Peter Nyamweya, Ondigi Nyandorio and Evans Omote struck for Mogweko in the 12th, 25th and 87th minutes respectively.

In another match played at the same venue, Gesicho Green Commandos enhanced their chances of qualifying for the last eight when they hit Nyamagesa 1-0.

Steven Ratemo scored the crucial goal in the 18th minute.Two matches will be played this Sunday, according to the fixture released by the co-ordinator, Isaac Isoe Suga. At Masimba Secondary School, Ebisora will face off against Bonyakoni while Gesicho will take on Masabo FC.Nairobi banker George Anunda Nyamweya is the cup's sponsor.
