New Districts to Be Created in Kisii, Says Kibaki

President Kibaki yesterday, said two more districts will be created in Kisii to "bring services closer to the people".

Addressing a delegation from Gucha, Kisii Central and Nyamira districts at State House, Nairobi, the President also said Egerton University's Kisii College would be upgraded into a fully-fledged university once it is expanded. A medical training college wold be built in the area and roads improved, he said.

Creating new districts, he said, should not be taken as political and that more would be created in other parts of the country.

Request is okay

"Your request for two more districts is okay and they will be created," he told the delegation, led by Energy minister Simeon Nyachae and Nyanza provincial commissioner Hassan Noor.

Responding to a memorandum read by councillor Kennedy Riogi for the community, the President said a district was supposed to have about 400,000 people. But most of Kenya's 71 districts had much smaller populations, he noted.

He said no region would be favoured in creating new administrative areas.

"Any deserving region will get a new district and it is the Government's work to serve Kenyans effectively," he said. But he stopped short of giving a time frame. Mr Noor said the three Kisii districts had received more than Sh600 million for free primary education, constituency development and bursary funds.
