8,000 Disown Nyachae-led Draft

The 8,000 faithful disowned the Nyachae-led draft constitution during prayers and harambee at Gekano Catholic Parish in Kitutu Masaba.

The Catholic faithful and other political leaders from Gusii called for the immediate resignation of Energy minister Simeon Nyachae over his stand on constitutional reforms.

They termed the minister a political liability that should not be denied room to make important decisions affecting the Abagusii. They accused the Nyaribari Chache MP of capitalising on poverty in the community to advance his political interests.

The faithful led by the priest in charge Father Stephen Ayako Saka said the Nyachae group did not consult the Church before they mutilated the people's Bomas draft.

The other leaders drawn from Kanu and LDP also censured Nyachae and the Kitutu Chache MP Jimmy Angwenyi, claiming the two were being used to push the Mount Kenya Mafia's agenda. Led by LDP Nyanza co-ordinator Orina Momanyi the leaders vowed to lock Nyachae's Ford People from Kisii in next General Election.

They accused Kisii MPs of misusing the Constituency Development Fund to advance their political course.

"Nyachae should quit politics because he is responsible for the wrong decision of the Abagusii in the last General Election," declared Momanyi.

"His advanced age has not been giving him time to offer sound political solutions to the people of Gusii," the leaders said of Nyachae.

"The Abagusii should reject the constitutional proposals in the referendum since it is clear that it will not reflect their views which they gave at Bomas," they said.

The Church harambee, which was to be presided over by Raila Odinga, went on despite rumours that it would be disrupted by youths allied to Kitutu Masaba MP Mwancha Okioma.
