Already, the athletics Kenya Nyanza South branch has marked the course and preparations for today's event are complete according to chairman Peter Angwenyi.
The race will start and finish at Gusii stadium and will start at 9 am, Angwenyi added.
He said the route will take runners through Nyanchwa, Daraja Mbili, Kisii Hotel, Kisii General Hospital, Kisii Police Station, Mwalimu Hotel, Daraja Moja, Kisii-Chemosit Road, Jogoo, Kisii Prison, Kisii Law courts back to Kisii Hotel, Good Morning flats, Hema Hospital them back to Gusii stadium.
Speaking to the Nation in Kisii town yesterday, Angwenyi also announced the unique prize structure for the race. He said winners in men's and women's races will each get Sh5, 000 and a cow. The runners up in both races will get Sh5, 000, the third placed athletes will get Sh3, 000 and a sack of maize while fourth placed runners will get a sack of maize. Fifth place will be worth Sh1, 000.
Other prizes will include race sponsors Safaricom's gifts.
Marathoner Beatrice Omwansa will grace the occasion in which Kitutu Masaba MP Mwancha Okioma and Kisii mayor Stephen Omurwa will be chief guests.
He said more than 200 athletes had confirmed their participation in the race. "We are expecting a huge field of runners because there will be no registration fees and also because school children are currently on holiday.
Today's race is part of a three race series in the larger Gusii with other races planned for Ogembo in Gucha district on September 23 and Kebirigo in Nyamira District on October 7.
Expected are Benson Ogato and Daniel Ongechi among other runners.
Meanwhile, the inaugural River Gucha Half Marathon will be held on Monday in Kitutu Masaba, Nyamira District.
The 21km race to be sponsored by Okioma will start and finish at Gucha Dispensary bridge. International marathoner Tecla Lorupe and Nyamira District Commissioner Samuel Karanja Njora will be the chief guests.
