Fr Henry Momanyi defended himself against accusations circulated to the media last week by a group of "aggrieved Christians" who had collected hundreds of signatures from five centres of his Our Lady of Assumption Nyamagwa Parish, Kisii Diocese.
The parishioners accused the priest of failing to build churches and cursing those who did not agree with him. He had also ignored the poor and engaged in "exorcising evil spirits", they claimed.
But the priest, at the centre of wrangles in the parish over the past few years, said it was a malicious campaign by a few individuals.
Aware of problems
"I have exhausted all procedures laid down by the Church but I had failed to resolve the conflict," the priest told the Nation on telephone.
In their petition, the aggrieved group accuses the priest of failing to initiate development projects.
Last week, Kisii Bishop Joseph Mairura said he was aware of problems at the council and was dealing with the wrangles in the best way possible. "There is no parish without problems," he added.
Bishop Mairura admitted that the conflict in that parish prompted the intervention of the former Pope's representative Archbishop Giovani Tonunci.
"There is iota of truth there, the Nuncio did not find any justification to the accusations levelled against the priest," he said.
