Mixed Feelings Greet Newly-Elected Committee

Football stakeholders from Nyamira, Kisii and Gucha districts yesterday reacted differently over the election of Alfred Sambu as the new KFF chairman.

While some hailed the move as positive, others termed the election exercise at Kasarani as "a farce" and appealed to world soccer governing body, Fifa, not to recognise the election results.

Those for the new team said Sambu "was tailor-made for the job" and advised him to concentrate in improving the standards of the game in the country.

Led by Shabana FC spokesman Peter Omwando, they appealed to those who lost in the elections to support the winners in improving Kenya's soccer standards.

But another group of stakeholders led by Fred Machana said allowing delegates who had earlier been barred to participate in the elections was wrong.

Patrick Osero, who sponsors several club tournaments in Kisii and Nyamira, said he supported Peter Onalo's move to go to court saying the Fifa/KFF Normalisation Committee had erred by allowing candidates at the last minute to contest national posts.

Machana and Osero said the exercise was not fair and appealed to Fifa to intervene. They said the constitution was not followed and that it would be unfortunate for Fifa themselves to breach the constitution.

He, however, said that the new team should concentrate their efforts in age-group soccer. Osero, who is also a Nairobi businessman, said: "Our under-17, under-20 and under-23 national teams should be put in place immediately."
