After their founder and chief sponsor Dogo Khan pulled out recently, the Kisii club faced a major survival battle but they seem to be winning it in commendable fashion.
Of their five games so far, Shabana have won the last three against Telkom, Gor Mahia and Nzoia Sugar. They have drawn once against National Bank and also lost once to Ulinzi Stars in Nakuru and remain unbeaten at the Gusii Stadium.
"The boys are self motivated as they know we currently have no sponsors and need to do well to get the financial support - that's why they are determined to win most of the matches," Shabana official Peter Omwando said yesterday.
Shabana - whose historical roll of honour has names like Mike Okoth, Henry Motego, Salim Mabruk, Richard Otambo, Evans Nyariki and Henry Nyandoro - are currently fifth in the 12-team Group 'A' standings with 10 points from their five games with an abandoned fixture against Mumias Sugar yet to be ruled on.
The fall of Nzoia Sugar and Chemelil Sugar, two of the high-flying teams in the Premier League, was the highlight of the weekend's games.
Nzoia who, the previous weekend collected maximum points from their two-match outing in Nairobi, met their match in the resurgent Shabana who beat them 1-0 at the Gusii Stadium on Sunday.
The defeat cost Nzoia the top position on the Group 'A' league table and it means there is no change among the teams in the leading pack. Ulinzi Stars, despite having no league game at the weekend, clung to the top perch in the Group 'B' with 15 points.
Premier League results:
Kangemi United 0 AFC Leopards 0; World Hope 2 Admin Police 2; Shabana 1 Nzoia Sugar 0; Red Berets 2 Sher Agencies 1; Kenya Pipeline 3 Chemelil Sugar 2.
