Prof Ongeri said he was heeding to pleas by delegates from Kisii and Nyamira districts who had requested that he enters the race to replace former President Moi.
Declaring his candidature, Ongeri asked the delegates to exercise patience and vet the candidates well.
The former minister asked them to elect a leader who can galvanise countrywide support and promote unity among supporters.
He spoke as Kanu acting deputy secretary general Dalmas Otieno said the declaration of many candidates to vie for the seat would not lead to disintegration of Kanu. Otieno has already declared support for former Cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott for chairmanship.
Meanwhile, sharp divisions have emerged among Kanu delegates in the North Rift over whom to support in the party's national elections.
They are torn between Keiyo South MP Nicholas Biwott, Uhuru and Sotik MP Anthony Kimetto.
Another two candidates who have declared an interest in the position are Nambale legislator Chris Okemo and Nominated MP Mutula Kilonzo.
