Group Wants People's HIV Status Protected

People with hearing disability yesterday described HIV/Aids tests as a stumbling block to development.

The group drawn from Trans Mara, Gucha, Kisii and Nyamira districts claimed that some people's jobs had been threatened after they were discovered to be suffering from Aids.

They argued that those who tested positive for HIV were stigmatised and could not concentrate on their income generating activities.

They told the Press in Kilgoris Town, Trans Mara District, that the anti-retrovirals meant little to a dying person.

Instead, the group said, an infected person would live relatively longer if he did not know his status.

"After all, there is great frustration in public hospitals when those infected go there for the ARVs. The medical officers do not understand sign language and most of them view those seeking their help as a bother," said one participant.

They appealed to the Government to establish a taxation scheme to help the immediate families of those suffering from the disease.

However, some participants called for the setting up of a testing centre for the deaf in Nyanza Province
