Kebirigo's Nyerere Wins Race in Nyamira

Onesmus Nyerere of Kebirigo Athletics Club clocked 18 minutes and five seconds to win the short course race during the Nyakongo Open cross-country meeting at Nyakongo Secondary School, Nyamira yesterday.

Boaz Mayaka, also of Kebirigo, finished second in 18:31 in the 4km race.

Abel Ondeyo, a former junior international, finished third in 18:32.

Nyerere said he would participate in the 12km senior men's race during the Nyanza provincial championships on Friday at the Kisii Golf Course.

"I participated in the 4km race to build my speed and endurance, but next week I will run the 12km race and I want to be in the team that will represent the country in the the world cross-country championships," said Nyerere.

Alice Mogire, who has already been named in the team that will train in Eldoret for the world cross-country championships, clocked 29 minutes to win the 6km junior women's race.

In Nyahururu, Monica Wangari clocked 27:52.8 to win the eight kilometre women's race.

Wangari, who has already been called up to the Eldoret training camp, was followed in second place by Pauline Wangari.
