GSU men, civilians killed in clash

Two GSU officers and two civilians were killed following a fight on Thursday - night between them and villagers in Nyamesocho, Gucha District.

Six other GSU officers and an Administration Police officer were admitted at Kilgoris Mission Hospital and Tabaka Mission Hospital.

The security personnel, who were pursuing stolen cattle from Transmara District into Gucha District, were reportedly attacked by villagers.

Briefing the Press in his office, Transmara DC Wilson Litole said cattle rustlers attacked the home of a Mr Nkariami Osupuko Location and made away with more than 100 head of cattle.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 am. The raiders were armed with guns which they used to scare away the villagers.The DC said the raiders later attacked the GSU camp at Osupuko with the intention of stealing more firearms but were repulsed. The GSU personnel caught up with the raiders at Nyamesocho Primary School near Magina Market.

The police officers admitted at Kilgoris Mission Hospital sustained arm, head, back and leg arrow injuries. One is in critical condition. They are Messrs Daniel Waweru, Simon Kigwa, Fredrick Ndiema, Stephen Kiplangat and Nicodemus Lewa.

The death of the GSU personnel and the two civilians came barely 24 hours after President Moi declared the Transmara and Gucha district border areas security zones. The police gave the names of the two civilians killed as Tom Ifoe and Nyang'wara Moya.
