Crowds Besiege Wamalwa

Leader of the Official Opposition Kijana Wamalwa yesterday found himself in trouble during a tour of Gucha District when a crowd blocked his convoy and beseeched him to secure the release of six villagers held at the Kenyenya DO's office for minor offences.

Administration policemen fired several times in the air to scare away the villagers as the politician took refuge in his car. Wamalwa, who spent more than three hours arguing with the district officer, a Mr Ndiwa, over the detention of the villagers, later warned administrators that time was up for those who did not serve the people with understanding and obedience.

"Let me remind some of these young men that we have already passed, through the IPPG, that dictatorial behaviour like what we witnessed today will no longer be tolerated in Kenya," he said.

Later, addressing at various points during a meet-the-people tour, Mr Wamalwa criticised leaders who refused to endorse the IPPG resolutions. He told Bomachoge people to continue supporting FORD Kenya as a tribute to party founder Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

The party's government would ensure an end to the perpetual tribal clashes along the borders of Gucha and Trans Mara. He wondered how security personnel could fail to stop clashes. Mr Wamalwa, who was accompanied by MPs Henry Obwocha (West Mugirango), Ferdinand Obure (Bomacoge) and John Munyasia (Sirisia), told the Gusii community to reject Kanu since it had failed to develop the area despite its agricultural potential.

He said Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae should not allow himself to be used and dumped by Kanu. FORD Kenya would give Mr Nyachae the respect due him should he decamp, Mr Wamalwa said.
