Report explains poor results in Gucha

Lack of girls' schools in Gucha district has hampered efforts to promote female education and stem the high drop out rate among them, a special report by the district education office says.

The report also reveals that the District Education Board is looking for ways to establish more girls' schools.

Out of the 110 secondary schools in the district, there are only four girls schools, a situation the report says "leaves most of the girls with no option other than joining mixed boarding and day schools".

The report, which extensively analyses the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) results in Gucha, indicates that performance in the last few years has been falling.

A worrying trend, it adds, has been set at the KCPE level where, for example, only 93 candidates out of 9,377 managed to score 500 marks and above in 1998. Out of these, only 17 joined national secondary schools.
