Call Snap Poll, MPs Dare Moi

Three MPs and 20 councillors have dared President Moi to call a snap General Election. They said they suspect President Moi plans to sneak himself back to power and urged Kenyans to vote the Kanu government out if such elections were called.

They criticised those advocating the extension of President Moi's rule, saying such leaders were driven by personal greed and were trying to pull Kenyans backwards.

The legislators, who addressed a crowd in the Nyakoora Primary School grounds, Kitutu Chache, Kisii District, during a funds drive in aid of the Nyakoora Catholic Church, included Alfred Nderitu of Mwea, Enock Magara (South Mugirango) and Jimmy Angwenyi (Kitutu Chache).

Speakers at the meeting said Kenyans urgently needed a leader with vision and credibility who could salvage the economy.

Mr. Nderitu of the Democratic Party accused President Moi's government of ruining the agricultural sector and of being responsible for other evils afflicting society.

"You people of Kisii should not accept to be exploited and run down by President Moi's government despite your great contribution in the agriculture sector! Protest strongly like we did in Mwea!" declared Mr. Nderitu.

Mr. Magara of Ford Kenya and Mr. Nderitu were applauded by the crowd when they urged Kenyans to block any attempt by the Moi regime to get another term in office.

They lauded area councillors for their decision to work together with their MP, Mr. Angwenyi, despite their party affiliation, saying leaders needed to co- operate and map out strategies for developing their areas.

Mr. Magara appealed to the clergy and all Kenyans to pray for a smooth transition from President Moi's rule.

Mr. Angwenyi said the Kisii community was ready to produce a leader who would be acceptable to all Kenyans.
