Quit, Ongeri Tells Nyachae

Rebel MP Simeon Nyachae was yesterday challenged to quit Kanu by his arch rival in Kisii politics. Speaking in his Nairobi office on arrival from Amsterdam, Cabinet Minister Sam Ongeri termed Mr. Nyachae's tirade against President Moi last week as "totally uncalled for and unacceptable".

Last week, Mr. Nyachae dared President Moi to kick him out of Kanu saying the party did not belong to an individual.

The former Finance Minister was responding to President Moi's earlier assertion that he and other Kanu rebels should be "man enough" to quit the party instead of sticking on like ticks. The Nyaribari Chache MP described the Head of State's language as "extremely primitive" and as "village talk".

Yesterday, Prof Ongeri said: "As Africans, we are duty bound to respect our elders, more so President Moi, who was elected by a majority of Kenyans and not a specific community," he said.

The Nyaribari Chache MP, Prof Ongeri added, should desist from creating unnecessary wars adding that the economy can only be improved in a sober atmosphere.

"I'm duty-bound to stand up against anyone pouring vitriol especially on the President, whose vision is for peace to prevail for competitive democracy to thrive," he added.
