More deaths as malaria spreads

In the Nyanza Province, medical authorities yesterday confirmed two more deaths from Kisii and Nyamira districts, recorded at Kisii District Hospital.

About 1,000 patients admitted to the Kisii and Nyamira district hospitals have malaria. The Nyanza Acting Provincial Medical Officer, Dr Ambrose Misore, said the Ministry of Health had deployed medical teams to combat the outbreak.

At the Kisii District Hospital, there were 200 adults and 300 to 400 children with malaria. Wajir East MP Mohammed Abdi Mahmud yesterday appealed to the government to carry out preventive measures against malaria outbreak in Wajir town. He said the outbreak was made worse by starvation and wate r-borne diseases.

The MP, addressing journalists at Parliament Buildings, commended the Oxfam UK for their relief efforts in Wajir.

Meanwhile, no deaths due to malaria were reported yesterday in Wajir, where the outbreak had claimed more than 1,500 lives by Wednesday last week, the Wajir District Medical Officer of Health, Dr A. Mohammed, says.
