Kanu headquarters sanctions Nyachae removal

MP Simeon Nyachae's removal as the Kisii Kanu branch chairmanship is now official. Kanu headquarters yesterday endorsed Monday's takeover of the branch leadership by the committee led by Mr. Geoffrey Asanyo.

Mr. Asanyo, a former Nakuru Kanu branch chairman, will lead the branch as Caretaker chairman, Kanu Secretary General Joseph Kamotho said. Meanwhile, Mr. Nyachae's supporters demonstrated yesterday in Keroka Town.

Keroka Town Council Chairman Lawrence Masega Nyaboga and Masimba Town Council Vice-Chairman Mathew Tinga led the group in demanding the reinstatement of Mr. Nyachae to the branch Kanu leadership. Earlier, there was a heavy police presence following word that Mr. Nyachae would storm the Kisii Kanu branch office yesterday morning.

Efforts to transport policemen to Keroka from Kisii to counter the demonstrators did not bear fruit. In Kisii Town, a heavy presence of police was witnessed. Many others mounted roadblocks at all the four major entries to the town. The roadblocks were mounted at Jogoo along the Kisii-Nyamira road, at Omote Ogisemba a few metres from Mr. Nyachae rural home, Menyinkwa along the Kisii-Kilgoris road, at Kisii along the Kisii Keroka road, Daraja Mbili along the Kisii-Kisumu road and Nyamataro along the same route.

The Kisii Kanu branch office was once again sealed off by armed police officers while each roadblock was manned by six police officers. The demonstrators beat a police dragnet mounted by police at the Keroka-Masimba junction which joins Keroka Sotik highway near Keroka Hospital.

They condemned the questioning of South Mugirango MP E. Magara by police.

They chanted slogans in favour of Mr. Nyachae and two former assistant ministers Reuben Oyondi and Dr Hezron Manduku and Keroka town council chairman Cllr Masega, among others.

They marched all the way from Masimba town council and Nyansiongo town council before assembling in Keroka town to be addressed by various local leaders.

The demonstrators passed outside Keroka police station chanting "No Nyachae, no Kanu" while terming the Asanyo group a bunch of "hirelings out to sell the Abagusii for monetary gain".

Keroka Town council chairman Lawrence Masega told the security organs in the district, especially the branch, to feed the head of state with the right kind of information.

He said Kanu headquarters cannot impose on the Kisii people leaders of doubtful credentials. They should instead give the people the right to choose their leaders.

Leaders who addressed the demonstrators, including councillors Joel Osoro, Mayhew Tinga, William Omae, Ronald Ondabu, Francis Aburi, and Stephen Keana Oyori Omae, said the community will not allow a few of their misguided sons to sell their people at the expense of the peoples' popularly elected leaders.
