Nyachae calls for govt of national unity

Former Finance Minister Simeon Nyachae yesterday led 12 Kanu and Opposition MPs in demanding a government of national unity. He said he would not defect from Kanu, but was ready to criss-cross the country crusading for the formation of a unity government.

His announcement came after he explained to a huge crowd at a fund raising rally exactly why he had walked out of the government. He said it was because he had demanded the arrest and prosecution of people who had drained public resources.

Corruption involving Sh160 billion was alleged in reports by the Parliamentary Accounts Committee, Public Investment Committee and by the Auditor-General.When Mr. Nyachae demanded this should be investigated, the Kanu establishment turned against him, he told the crowd.

He added: "Immediately I notified the authority, the big shots involved in the government ganged up to finish me."Mr. Nyachae told the audience he was not as fearless in his political ambitions as his critics had portrayed him.

He said: "It is through the formation of a government of national unity that the current economic measures that Kenyans are experiencing can be eradicated."The Nyaribari Chache MP said that while serving in the Treasury, he unearthed several shady financial deals involving senior government officers.

"These same officers have made the level of poverty in the country rise from 24 per to 46 per cent in the last 17 years, exposing Kenyans to worst standards of living."

He went on "Many Kenyans have no option but have to revert to the old age kind of life and one will not be surprised to visit homes and find people using hides and sacks to cover themselves since they cannot afford a simple mattress."

He said it was wrong for the government to continue dismissing the demands by the DP leader Mwai Kibaki for accountability on how more than Sh180 billion collected annually as tax has been spent.

He said that Mr. Kibaki should not just be dismissed but the issues he was raising should be addressed.Others MPs drawn from Kanu, NDP and DP said that Kenyans were counting on Mr. Nyachae and Mr. Kibaki to save the country from bad governance.

The MPs included Mr. Henry Obwocha (Ford-K), Soita Shitanda (Ford-K), Otieno Kajwang (NDP), Mwangi Kiunjuri and Joshua Thoro (DP), Enock Magara (Ford-K), Tharakwa Kamau (DP) and Kanu MPs Zaphenia Nyangara, Jimmy Angwenyi and two Assistant Ministers Joseph Kiangoi and Zebedeo Opore.

Mr. Kiangoi had difficulty addressing the rally after the gathering demanded that he declare his stand on Gusii politics. The assistant minister disowned politicians from the Abagusii community out to fight Mr. Nyachae.
The other MPs commended Mr. Nyachae for his firm stand and urged him to seek the Presidency in the year 2002.

Mr. Magara of South Mugirango asked the Chief Justice to transfer magistrates in Kisii, Nyamira and Homa Bay District saying they were encouraging corruption. On the Constitution, the MPs disowned President Moi's suggestions to refer the matter to Parliament.
