APs shoot in the air to disperse rowdy farmers

A contingent of administration policemen fired several shots in the air to disperse Nyamira coffee farmers who turned rowdy during the cooperative society's elections.

The Nyangoko Coffee factory compound turned into a battlefield on Wednesday when farmers who were barred from participating in the elections clashed with cooperative officials and the security.

Trouble started when cooperative officials refused to count the queuing farmers from Bomanyanya electoral zone, arguing that the farmers had allowed Nyansangio Coffee factory farmers to participate

The farmers, who were armed with sticks, pelted cooperative officials with stones before being repulsed by the security men.

There was a stampede as cooperative officials and farmers scampered for safety. No serious injuries were reported.

However, the incident did not affect elections in Kioge, Nyabomite and Nyansangio coffee factories, where farmers elected their officials. The elections were witnessed by the district cooperative officer, Mr. Ezron Getui, and the provincial boss.
