Ndereba And Masai Selected for Yokohama Ekiden

Four-time Boston Marathon champion Catherine Ndereba and veteran cross-country runner Edith Masai have been named in the Kenya squad to this year's Yokohama International women's Ekiden, to be held on February 25 in Yokohama, Japan.

The duo are in the seven-member squad that will try and wrestle the team title from Russia. Ndereba has taken part in several races, including the last two editions of the Chiba Ekiden.Fourteen teams, including six from abroad - China, Ethiopia, Kenya, Russia, Romania, and the US - will take part. The Ekiden is divided into six stages of 5km, 10km, 6km, 10km and 5.2km.

Only Japan, who won in 2005 have competed in all the 23 editions while champions Russia and China have each competed in all but one edition.

The Kenyan team has Ndereba, three-time world cross country senior women's 4km champion Edith Masai, Caroline Kwambai, Irene Kwambai, Irene Limika, Caroline Chepkorir and Doris Chepkoech. The reserves are Winfrida Kebaso, Caroline Cheptanui and Irene Cherotich. AK public relations officer Peter Angwenyi said Ndereba had confirmed her availability. Last year, Kenya finished fourth after Russia, Japan and China.


Angwenyi also said two athletes - Cyrian Kiogora, who finished fourth in the Lewa marathon, and Winfrida Kwamboka Nyansikera, ninth in the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, - are required to report at the AK secretariat immediately. The two are to be entered in international races.Meanwhile, the race for a berth in the Kenya's team to the World Cross Country Championship, which will be staged on March 24 in Mombasa, gains momentum from today with Nyanza South districts staging their championships.

Kisii will stage theirs at Kisii golf course, Nyamira's will be at Nyambara secondary school while Gucha's will be staged at Nyamachi High School. Other districts countrywide will have their championships tomorrow.
