Siekei Fastest Over 5,000m

Jefferson Siekei clocked 14 minutes and 22 seconds to win the 5,000 metres race during the Nyanza South Athletics Kenya branch track and field trials at Gusii stadium, Kisii yesterday.

Siekei, winner of last year's Safaricom Kebirigo 10-kilometre road race, met the qualifying time for the national championships together with compatriot Leonard Langat and Metamaywa Secondary School's Isaiah Ondieki.

Langat clocked 14:30 while Ondieki clocked 14:34.00.Only 20 out of the more than 300 participants met the qualifying marks.Nancy Samuel of Ichuni Girls High School clocked 4:46.77 to win the 1,500m and was followed by Rose Moroga of Kisii in 14:49.15.

Evans Omari also qualified in the 800m for the national trials that will be staged at Kasarani, Nairobi next week. He won the race in 1:53.04. He was followed by Francis Omari also from Kisii who clocked 1:55.00.Chenes Mayaka of Kisii clocked 2:23.50 to win the women's race. Hellen Nyabuto of Gucha clocked 2:24.53 for second and Patricia Nyabuti also from Gucha (2:24.39) was third.

Samuel Omwoyo, a student at St Kizito Nyansiongo High School, won the 400m hurdles in 59:55seconds to qualify for the nationals.

Emily Nyairo of Gucha was the only woman to qualify for field events, winning the shot putt with a throw of 10.01 metres.
