Seven Die in Kisii Road Accident

Seven people died when a public transport van rammed into a lorry at Nyangoge, along the Kisii-Chemosit road.

Five people died on the spot while two others died at the Nyamira District Hospital while undergoing treatment on Monday.Speaking to The Standard at the scene of the accident, Kisii Area Base Commander, Mr Davidson Luchacha, said the ill-fated matatu was trying to overtake another vehicle when it hit an oncoming lorry.

Area OCPD, Mr Antony Kivuva, said nine people were admitted at the hospital. Elsewhere in Kibwezi and Makueni districts, police have intensified the hunt for a six-man gang that on Sunday shot dead a driver of a Mombasa bound bus along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Makueni police chief, Mr Lawrence Ngarama, said a team of detectives has been dispatched to the highway to track down the gangsters.The six shot the driver of a bus belonging to Coast Bus Company at Simba town after he allegedly refused to co-operate. They took control of the bus and commandeered it for about 5km along the old Mombasa road where they descended on the scared and helpless passengers.


The carjackers, who had 11 pistols, also raped three women during the 1am incident and stole money, mobile phones and other valuables before fleeing on foot.The women were taken to the Machakos General Hospital where they were treated and discharged.Kibwezi District Commissioner, Mr John Elung'ata, condemned the attack and assured motorists that there was no cause for alarm as security on the highway has been beefed up.
