Nyachae says attack on home political

Kanu rebel Simeon Nyachae described the night attack on his Kisii Town home as political terrorism, meant to silence him.

He drew parallels between the Saturday raid, during which two cars were set on fire in his compound, and the three break-ins at his Nairobi companies - Sansora Flour and Kabansora Oil Mills.

All took place since January last year when he declined to become Industry Minister after being ousted as Finance Minister.

The Nyaribari Chache MP spoke yesterday of his suspicion that the most recent attack was orchestrated by a group out to intimidate him and make him wary of commenting on national issues.

"This is just political harassment that has both national and local dimensions. The attack is related to my stand on certain political issues in the country," said Mr. Nyachae.

Three times during an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr. Nyachae said: "I have left my fate and that of my family to God."

He added: "The motive of the attack is political. What I do not understand is why they cannot draw a line between Nyachae the politician and the innocent members of his family. What has my family and business got to do with the politics I follow?"

He accused the police of complicity with the criminals.

"During the latest incident the police mishandled a torch left by the attackers; they did not even dust it for fingerprints. One of the officers simply picked it up, plus a bullet also left behind by the raiders. When a member of my family asked them why they were interfering with vital evidence they merely laughed him off saying they knew their work".

At the same time as the 3am raid on Mr. Nyachae's home, another group of people dumped a dead goat at his Sansora premises in another part of the town.

Meanwhile Kisii police boss Mr. Thomas Otipo said police were pursuing clues but had not made any arrests. He said the force has launched serious investigations to establish the motive behind the attack.

Mr. Nyachae's son Michael, who runs the family's business interests, was in the house with his wife and children and the time of the raid.

The former minister challenged the police to help quell suspicion that they were being used to terrorise and intimidate him.

"I think the police should tell us what is happening, they know a lot about the raid on my business premises and now my home."

Two days before the attack on Mr. Nyachae's home, raiders stole valuables from the home of former Assistant Minister Mr. David Kombo, on the outskirts of Kisii Town.

Earlier a Kisii advocate, Mr. Ondaba Marita, was attacked and seriously injured by unknown people. He was was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital.

Reacting to the incident, Kitui Central MP Mrs Charity Ngilu (SDP), condemned attack saying it was an act of hooliganism executed by Kanu "because of his stance on democracy.

The incident, she noted, was a scheme by the ruling party to intimidate those it deemed are opposed to bad governance.

"This is the tip of the iceberg; Kenyans should expect many more such ugly incidents," she Social Democratic Party leader told Nation on the telephone.

She urged Mr. Nyachae not to waver on his calls for a people-driven constitutional review formula saying the rest of the Opposition are supporting him.

Kikuyu MP Paul Muite (Safina) said that coming hot on the heels of the stoning of sacked Minister Kipkalya Kones' convoy in the presence of the police last week the attack on Mr. Nyachae is a signal that "the state is institutionalising violence and thuggery as a political instrument".

"The state is starting bushfires which it will not contain or put out. State instigated violence is the sort of fires the state has no business fanning just now," said Mr. Muite.

The South Mugirango MP Nyankieya Magara (Ford-K) said the incident signified President Moi's failure to protect the lives and property of Kenyans.

"Kenyans need security and protection, Kenyans have the right to demand for protection and any government that can't protect its people has no business being in power," he said.

Mr. Magara said that the fact that the President's residence was raided and valuable items stolen was a manifestation of the level to which Kenyans were insecure.

Ten officials of a university students organisation which draws its membership from the three Gusii districts -- Nyamira, Gucha and Kisii - - termed the attack a "demonic act by satanic creatures.

They also called for speedy investigations and arrest of the perpetrators. They said Mr. Nyachae was being targeted because of his track-record in fighting corruption, poverty and misuse of public

A number of Kisii leaders have already condemned the attacks and called for immediate security measures to cushion Mr. Nyachae and his family from harm by marauding political thugs.

"This is political malice and seems to have been highly organised to scare Nyachae and his supporters but it is a waste of time and energy".

Former Kisii mayor James Gisemba called on the President to guarantee the safety of Mr. Nyachae, especially now that he has sounded an alarm that he was being targeted by political enemies
