Directors Picked In Tea Polls
The smallholder sector is represented at the new board by former DC Mbuo Waganagwa of Rukuriri tea factory, Joseph Muchai Ng'ang'a from Makomboki factory and Mr. Evans Mwai from Rugati factory.
Others are Jonah Keter from Tegat factory, Ndubit Moseti from Tombe and Gideon Asirigwa Mbagaya from Mudete factory.
Former Safari Rally chairman Nicholas Ng'ang'a and Kenya Tea Growers Association chairman Titus Kipyab, are some of the directors representing the large-scale tea sector.
Mr. Ng'ang'a represents Limuru while Mr. Kipyab, the Nyayo Tea Zones chairman, hails from Nandi.
The other directors from the large scale sector are the chairman of Kapchorua Tea Company, a subsidiary of the giant George Williamson, Mr. Nigel Graham Sandy-Lumsdaine and Mr. Nivelle V. Davies from Kericho.
Mr. Ngugi Waireri, the East African Tea Trade Association chairman will represent the tea trade sector in the new board.
The director of elections G.K Nzuva described the exercise as 97 per cent successful.
The elections were a culmination of tea sector reforms aimed at giving farmers full control.
They were characterised by violence that left three farmers and a policeman dead.
Some 360,000 small scale tea growers from 28 districts picked 11,368 farmers to represent them at leaf collection centres as committee members.
A total of 267 members were elected to Tea factory boards or leaf base committees, while 12 directors were elected to the Kenya Tea Development Agency Limited.
Eight factory directors from Kisii, Gucha and Nyamira districts were yesterday ejected from the election hall in Kisii.
Nyanza Provincial Livestock Production Officer, Mr. Jacton Okumbe, ordered out four of the directors citing court injunctions barring them from participating in the elections.
Mr. Ndubi Moseti was elected as the Nyanza director with 20 votes after beating Mr. Tom Sawe who got 17 votes and Mr. Mark Mangerere with only 3 votes.
