Exams: Nyachae, Ongeri blamed

Poor performance in national examinations in Kisii has been blamed on political wrangles. Kenya National Union of Teachers assistant national secretary Fred Ontere claimed that the differences between former Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae and Public Health Minister Sam Ongeri had diverted the attention of their supporters in the area from education issues.

He advised the two leaders to put aside their political differences to enable pupils concentrate on their studies.

Speaking to journalists in Oyugis Town, the Knut official urged all stakeholders in education to convene an urgent meeting to discuss the declining education standards in Kisii, Gucha and Nyamira districts.

Mr. Ontere said teachers should not be blamed for the poor performance because most schools lacked facilities like laboratories, libraries and classrooms.

Mr. Ontere told parents to desist from causing confusion in the management of schools.

"The behaviour where parents storm schools to eject head teachers over poor performance is barbaric and should stop," he added.

Meanwhile, several officials in the Nyamira education office have been transferred.

Those affected include the assistant education officers, zonal inspectors and teachers advisory centre tutors.

Announcing the transfers at Nyamira Technical Secondary School, District Education Officer Nathan Kiriago said non-performers would be demoted or sacked.
