FGM Continues Despite Seminars

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Nyamira District yesterday continued for the second day running despite constant seminars organised against it in the past. A spot check established that the majority of those carrying out the exercise were medics.

For the last three months non-governmental organisations have been holding seminars to sensitise members of the community to discard the exercise which is rampant in the area.

It was also noted that open celebrations have been done away with as the rite is being carried out during the night. However, boys circumcision celebrations are openly being conducted during the day.

The members of the community have however discarded the culture of taking their children to traditional circumcisors and are now taking them to hospitals. Some of crusaders against the rite led by Jane Momanyi accused medics of sabotaging their campaign by secretly carrying out the vice.

They asked the Provincial Administration to intervene and arrest those carrying out the outdated operation. Some of the nurses who talked to the East African Standard but sought anonymity said it was the wish of some of the parents to have their girls circumcised and therefore they could not turn them away as they were paying.
