Cherono Lines Up for Kisii Road Race

Commonwealth Games women's marathon runner-up, Helen Cherono, top the field in tomorrow's Safaricom Bamba 10km Road Race in Kisii.Cherono won last year's Gucha leg of the Gusii series and is targeting a clean sweep of the three races this year as a dress rehearsal for her marathon plans.

Cherono will also feature in the Standard Chartered Greatest Race on Earth Series this year. Cherono won the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon in 2004 and finished second last year.

Athletics Kenya (AK) Nyanza South branch chairman Peter Angwenyi said Cherono was very keen on the Gusii series as this is where she came from on her way to stardom.Apart from Cherono, several other top athletes are expected including a team from the fast-rising Kiptenden Athletics Club in the neighbouring Kericho District. They include last year's winner Wesley Ochoro, who was in Kenya's team that won the Beijing Ekiden in China this year. Top prizes will be up for grabs during the event.

Organisers on Wednesday announced the winners would also be rewarded with livestock.Angwenyi said the men and women's winners' would each receive a cow and Sh10,000. Second placed will pocket Sh5,000 with third placed walking away with Sh3,000.
