US Based Ochoro Best At Kisii Run

Wesley Ochoro outclassed a field of 160 runners to win the inaugural Safaricom Sambaza 10km road race in Kisii town yesterday.Ochoro, who is based in the US, clocked 28 minutes and 16 seconds to win the hotly contested race beating favourite Valentine Orare to second position in 28:46. 36.Gideon Ngatunyi of Nyota High School, who led the race for the better part, was beaten to third position in 28:56.00.

Boaz Mayaka of Kebirigo Athletics Club took fourth position in 29:02.00 while Evans Mayoyo of Nyamira was fifth in 29:02.00.The reigning Kebirigo Road Race champion Onesmus Nyerere failed to finish in the top ten. He said he had not done his speed work well. "Since I returned from Holland, I have not done my speed work because of an injury. But in the next race in Gucha I will give runners a run for their money," he said.

Alice Mogire a 14-year-old school girl, clinched the women's race in 34:11.00 beating a strong field of 49 athletes.Mogire a Standard Eight pupil at Gesibei Primary School in Nyamira District, beat pre-race favourite Eunice Orwaru to second position in 34:50.00. Jackline Okemwa of Nyota took third position in 35:03.00 while Rael Michira clocked 35:20.00 to take fourth position.

Jackline Nyakundi of Erera took fifth position in 35:23.00 while compatriot Jackline Nyangeri was sixth in 35:33.00.Mogire was confident of winning the next races in the series Ð the Simu ya Jamii road race in Ogembo, Gucha on September 23 and the Safaricom Kebirigo Road Race on October 7.

"I will defend my Kebirigo Road Race title and the Ogembo race will be mine because that is my home turf," she vowed.A total of 209 men started the race but only 90 finished while in the women's race 49 runners started the race and 13 finished.Kitutu Masaba MP Mwancha Okioma flagged off the race. The runners went through Kisii town's streets and were cheered on by the huge crowds that turned up to witness the first street race in Kisii. One fan, Leornard Mogaru, said: "We only watch events like this on TV. We are very happy and we thank the sponsors for bringing this event to Kisii town."

The winners took home Sh5, 000 and a cow, the runners up in both races were given Sh5,000 and the third placed athletes got Sh3,000. Fourth placed runners were given a sack of maize and Sh500 while fifth placed athletes received Sh1, 000.The race was organised by Kebirigo Athletics Club and Athletics Kenya's Nyanza South branch.

AK officials, led by the branch secretary Nelson Maroa, his deputy Hezron Mokamba and Nyamira sub-branch secretary Gilbert Oroko Omariba attended the event and also thanked Safaricom.Eric Muthuuri, Safaricom's dealer representative in Nyanza and Rift Valley, represented the sponsors.
