Election Stalls As Leaders 'Disappear'
It is alleged that they are being hidden by two leading politicians from the district.
Mr. Charles Gichana Angwenyi, who said he had accompanied the team to Nairobi, resurfaced on Monday evening. He claimed the group had been split right in the middle after Local Authorities Minister Sam Ongeri differed with Kanu branch chairman Geoffrey Asanyo over who should take over as mayor.
The councillor said Prof Ongeri supports Mr. John Maroko, a nominated councillor, while Mr. Asanyo is fronting for the deputy mayor, Mr. Michael Okari.
In Kakamega, Joshua Adanji retained his mayoral seat during elections conducted yesterday. Mr. Adanji (Kanu) narrowly defeated party colleague Shadrack Khalisia by eight votes to seven. Mr. Mark Andala was elected deputy mayor, and Ford-Kenya Councillor Sylvanus Otiende is the new finance, staff and general purpose committee chairperson.
The town planning and works slot went to Mr. Herbert Nato. Mrs Ruth Kadiba was elected unopposed as the chairperson of the education, housing and social services committee.
Former Kericho mayor John Kauria has declared his interest in recapturing the seat. Others eyeing the post are the incumbent, Mayor Sammy Rugut, and Mr. Elijah Chebelyon and Mr. Eric Keter.
